The U.S. Geological Survey data release that digitised karst features across northern Arkansas records, for Cleburne County, 15 springs and zero sinkholes.

Zero is unusual in this dataset. Every other county covered on this site records both, often in comparable numbers, and one records a hundred sinkholes. Cleburne records none — and the reason is straightforward. Sinkholes form in carbonate rock, and there is no carbonate here. The state geologic map places Heber Springs on Bloyd Shale and the Prairie Grove Member of the Hale Formation — Pennsylvanian shale and sandstone — with no carbonate mapped within about twenty-two kilometres.

That matters practically. Sinkhole guidance written for the karst counties, and repeated across regional advice about the Ozarks generally, does not describe this ground. Springs are the water story here, and springs are the inverse of sinkholes: water emerging rather than water disappearing.

Why a spring gets three hundred feet

Arkansas requires all sewage system components to sit 300 feet from any spring used as a source of domestic water. Set that against the other separations in the same rules and it stands out:

Three times the well setback, for something people often think of as less formal than a well. The logic becomes clear once you consider what each thing is.

A well is a controlled point of entry. It is drilled, cased and grouted, and the casing is a deliberate barrier between the surface and the aquifer. A hundred feet protects a shaft that has its own engineered protection.

A spring is a groundwater outlet — the point where an aquifer discharges to the surface on its own, along whatever path the rock provides. There is no casing, no grout and no engineered barrier, and the water arrives having travelled a route nobody chose. The protection is distance, because distance is the only protection available.

Spring-fed domestic supply is still genuinely in use in this part of Arkansas. Where a parcel has one, or a neighbour does, 300 feet is a long way — and it is the constraint most likely to shape where a field can go.

Shallow rock, but the easiest ground in the area

Depth to bedrock is the leading limitation at roughly 58 percent of the country around Heber Springs — and this is the only town covered on this site where that is true. The dominant soil is Steprock at about 29 percent, formed in residuum from sandstone and shale.

Yet the area also carries the lowest “very limited” share of any node covered here, at about 67 percent.

Both are correct. Rock is close to the surface across much of this ground, but it is sandstone and shale rather than cherty carbonate — so the soil above it lacks the chert fragments that reduce effective volume elsewhere, and the ground is not the clay that will not perc further north. It is a single, legible constraint rather than several compounding ones, and a single constraint is easier to design around.

That is the practical read: expect the design to be governed by how much soil sits above rock, and expect that question to have a cleaner answer here than on a cherty carbonate hillside where the profile interleaves.

And a great deal of the map is water

About 16.5 percent of the area around Heber Springs is open water — Greers Ferry Lake. That is not a soil rating; it is a sixth of the surrounding country that is not land at all, and it changes what the remaining land is worth and how it is used.

It also means a large share of parcels here are within reach of the 100-foot high water mark separation, and some fall under the 300-foot rule where a lake sits within a quarter mile of a water supply intake. One point worth raising with the county early on a parcel here: whether any spring in the vicinity is used as a domestic water source. The 300-foot setback applies to springs used for domestic supply, so the status of a nearby spring is a question with a specific answer, and it is better established before a field is located than after.
